Bannockburn

Bannockburn06408

… 2014 is the 700th anniversary of
the battle of Bannockburn
where Scottish and English troops
led by Robert the Bruce and Edward II fought …

Bannockburn06396

… now an idyllic spot
this was a gruesome and bloody battle
where thousands died …

Bannockburn06402

… frankly I learned nothing much about the history  from my visit …

Bannockburn06392

… in fact in my battle game
we  re-wrote history so that the English won  …

although I died as no doubt I would have done

Bannockburn06390

… and I came away disturbed by
the new digital interactive visitor centre
where the battle is re-fought
several times a day …

Bannockburn06398

… maybe it is a significant battle
in the ongoing fight for Scottish independence from England …

Bannockburn06404

… but must we glorify war
in these frightening times that we live in …

surely national institutions have a moral duty
to contextualise and teach the horrors of war
not just make money

  1. SO true… this whole year feels a little over imaginative on the centenary of the first world war…

  2. Well said. Completely agree.
