Magic Lanterns

Malden' triple lantern, 1880s

… I loved doing magic lantern workshops at MOMI
because the old lanterns really are magical …

… but this is even more magical …

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii photographed the Russian Empire
between 1909-1915 with the support of Tsar Nicholas II
using his own unique colour technique …

… using a plate camera (as above) to produce black and white glass plates negatives
he would take three images of the same subject in rapid succession …

… projecting these three images using a triunial lantern
with a red, green or blue filter in each lens
created a full colour image on the screen …

Amazing

… the railcar at the back is possibly his mobile darkroom
reminding me of the Soviet agitprop trains

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii’s work
has been digitally re-mastered by the Library of Congress
and can be viewed online here.
