Balcarres Pt 2

Balcarres Estate lies just north of Colinsburgh which would be a beautiful little village if it were not dissected by the main coast road (B942) to the East Neuk villages of Pittenweem and Anstruther. This one road village can be a nightmare to navigate through on a busy, sunny (rare I know) day.  The village was built by Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres, to house those who supported him during the Jacobite uprisings in 1689 and 1715.

Balcarres Estate has been in the Lindsay family since 1586. The house itself has been modified several times since then. The house is surrounded by formal gardens and high up on Balcarres Craig stands a Gothic Folly built by Robert Lindsay around 1813. There is also restored doocote, crumbling chapel, several lodges, a disused quarry and mill. The main activities of the Estate are farming (organic arable farming, plus beef and lamb) and house rentals.
